Instrument study · 01

Alto sax, from the reed out.

Starting with the horn itself: a pressure-driven reed, a widening bore, and the player’s breath controls. No tune or melody is involved yet.

Long-tone checks

Isolated concert-pitch A notes across three registers. Compare the same middle A with vibrato added.

Low · A3

Reed and bore response, held note.

Middle · A4

Straight-tone control, held note.

Upper · A5

Higher effective bore setting.

Middle · A4 + vibrato

Same note and model; player vibrato control enabled.

What is being modeled

The sound is generated by the coupled reed and bore—not assembled from a bank of preset harmonics.

ReedMass, stiffness, damping, changing aperture, and nonlinear airflow.
BoreEight widening waveguide sections with impedance scattering and propagation delay.
Bell / openingFrequency-dependent reflection and radiation at the open end.
Player controlsBreath-pressure attack and release, subtle airflow variation, optional vibrato.
